When Audio Note UK took the decision to develop a new range of tone arms to replace the original versions, expectations were high, especially in view of the excellent reputation of the earlier arms. The new series have been designed with the intention of working on a vast range of turntables, and all use a standard single-hole Rega mount pattern. Although the mounting might be standard, the new arms truly push the boundaries of performance, sound quality and engineering precision. The new range is manufactured in a state-of-the-art facility in Austria, and every individual component is custom designed and made in-house to ensure consistent quality. Audio Note tone arms all have the same basic construction, comprising a main arm tube machined from a single billet of high-grade aluminium. The arm wands are both internally and externally tapered, thereby lowering overall mass and also increasing rigidity.
The structural torsional rigidity of the design allows the Audio Note arms to work perfectly with almost any cartridge design, regardless of weight or compliance. From the lightest tracking moving magnet right up to Audio Note’s Io models, the arms allow a cartridge to track the record groove superbly, minimising surface noise and maximising musical enjoyment. Bias adjustment is achieved via the classic ‘falling weight’ method, as this offers the most easy to adjust and reliable method. The vertical and horizontal bearings are not the traditional ‘ball race’ type, but a ‘captured unipivot’ arrangement, which provides significantly superior performance to the conventional arrangement found in other tonearms. VTA adjustment is also incorporated, through the use of a threaded collar and locking nut, allowing extremely precise adjustment. All the arms in the Audio Note range are of nine-inch effective length and are available finished in either black or silver.
The Arm Three is Audio Note’s ‘statement’ model. Similar in basic construction to the Arm One and Arm Two, it is uses Audio Note premium-quality silver internal wiring and is supplied with a multi-strand AN-Vx silver external connecting cable. The arm is supplied as standard with four internal conductor wires, but can also be specified with six conductors to allow use with the Io Ltd. cartridge. Read the product review.
